The first service a new Yamaha ever gets, and the one that decides how the next ten years go. Here is what is in it, why it is not just an early oil change, and how to book it in about two minutes.

What's in it

  • Engine and gearcase oil — changed, not topped up. This is the oil that has carried everything the first 25 hours wore off the rings, the bearings and the gears.
  • Inline fuel filters and fuel/water separators — replaced. A new fuel system picks up whatever the tank and the lines shipped with.
  • Lubrication of the fittings — steering, tilt tube, linkages.
  • Inspection of the key components — belts, hoses, clamps, anodes, prop and hub, and every fastener the factory torqued once.
  • Yamaha diagnostics — the engine's own computer read by the factory tool, so a fault logged in the first hours is found now and not in July.

Why the first change matters more than any other

A new engine's first hours are the only ones where the rings, bearings and gears are still wearing into each other, and the oil comes out carrying that fine metal. Getting it out early is the whole point — leave it in and you are circulating it through a brand new engine for another season. Once it is done, the engine goes onto the ordinary schedule: the 100-hour annual, and the two-, three- and five-year work after it.

When it's due

Once, at 25 hours — which on this coast is usually the first month or two of the first season. It is an hours figure, not a calendar one, so an engine that reaches 25 hours in June gets it in June. A boat we sold gets it on our own reminder; any other Yamaha is welcome.

The 100-hour annualEvery 100 hours or twelve months — the one that keeps every other bill smaller. Spark plug replacementEvery two years. A worn set takes the coils with it when it finally goes. Vapor separator tank serviceThe service that keeps a high-pressure fuel pump alive. Anode replacementEvery two years, sooner in a slip. The part that corrodes so the engine does not. Water pump & thermostat serviceEvery 300 hours or three years. Seals included, which is the part that matters. Timing belt serviceInspected from five years. Belt, idler pulleys and tensioners together. The maintenance scheduleEvery interval on one page, with a card and a door to each.
