Spring commissioning
The season doesn't start at the ramp — it starts at the shop, where a no-start costs you nothing but a phone call. Commissioning is the winterization run in reverse, plus the proof.
What's in it
- Batteries — charged, load-tested, terminals cleaned. The winter's first casualty, every year.
- Fuel system — checked after the layup; stale or wet fuel dealt with before it reaches the engine.
- Water systems re-commissioned — antifreeze flushed, systems pressurized and checked for winter cracking while a split fitting is a part, not a flooded bilge.
- The engine run — first start on the hose or in the well at the shop, fluids and leaks checked, so the ramp isn't the test bench.
- The look-over — prop, anodes, safety gear dates, trailer lights if it rides one.
Book it in March
Every shop on Delmarva fills in the same three weeks of April. The boats that splash on the first warm weekend are the ones that were booked in March — everyone else is in the queue behind them, watching the weather.
What it costs
Quoted same-day — it depends on the boat, its systems, and how it was winterized. The writer puts a number on it with you before any work starts.
