The one-size-up conversation

Cobia 285 CC vs 305 CC

Joe has this conversation every week: a buyer walks in for the 285 and stops under the 305's bow. Two feet doesn't sound like much. On the water it's a different boat. Here's the honest version.

The short version

The 285 CC is the sweet spot. At 28.5 feet with a 9'11" beam, 231 gallons and up to 700 horsepower, it does ninety percent of what any Delmarva family or canyon crew asks of a boat — and it can still go home on a trailer with the right truck and permits. It's the heart of the Cobia lineup for a reason.

The 305 CC is the committed offshore boat. The extra two feet and seven inches of beam show up exactly where you want them: in a head sea on the way home, and in cockpit room when there are six aboard instead of four. Twin F350s, 265 gallons, and a presence at the dock the 285 doesn't quite have. It also lives best in a slip — this is where trailering stops being part of the plan.

Who should buy which

  • Buy the 285 if most trips are three or four people inside twenty miles, you want the option of trailering, and "the same job for less money" sounds like wisdom rather than compromise.
  • Buy the 305 if you're offshore most weekends with a full crew, the ride home in an afternoon chop is what you remember about a boat, and the slip is already sorted.
  • Either way — when Cobia's factory sale is running, both usually carry real money off, and the gap between them narrows. Check the current events before deciding the 305 is out of reach.
